I find this all quite interesting as I really don't have much of an understanding of the organized church here in the UK. As my religious experience comes from the North American Baptist world that is a history I investigated. I guess I now need to start digging into the history of the Episcopal church.

`...God was going to reconfigure his church. This is happening, '

Well, that sounds like one thing he'd share with Spong, then.

(/me wonders if that's ironic ;)

I found the document by Bishop Pierre Whalon cited here:

helpful and gave some of the background to where the American Episcopal Church is at at the moment. The link between the SEC and the American church goes back to the fact that the first bishop to be consecrated in the American church was 'done' by SEC bishops (as the American bishops could not pledge allegiance to the British monarch as they would have had to do if they had been consecrated by the CofE. This, apparently, also prevented Desmond Tutu being considered for the Archbishop of Canterbury - George Carey got the job).

There are plenty of reports of the proceedings of the House of Bishops in the Blogosphere - try http://blog.edow.org/weblog/.

As to the SEC there is a new booklet out on the history and development of the SEC as part of the Grosvenor Essay series. See
