Garbage did it when it was kind of uncool. Goldfrapp managed to hang on until the next wave. Ladyhawke, Lady Gaga, Florence + The Machine, Little Boots. I think there's a surge of popularity for these quirky-looking-fashion-icon lady singers with their retro soft-pop electronica. Am I missing anyone from that list of the up-and-coming last year's next big things?

I suppose Adele should be in there too at the pop end of the scale, balanced out by Imogen Heap at the other. There's an almost tangible similarity to their performing styles.
